Historik och förekomst
Mpoxvirus förekommer hos apor och gnagare i Central- och Västafrika. Viruset upptäcktes 1958 vid Statens Seruminstitut i Köpenhamn i samband med att en koppsjukdom uppstod hos krabbmakaker som hölls som experimentdjur.
